Description
"The pleasantest resort in Carson and where everything kept by the bar is the best quality."
The two-story St. Charles was constructed in 1862 and reputed for its elegance from day one. Originally named "Muller's," the St. Charles was one of the first hotels in Carson City. Despite its opulence its builders also realized the potential profits from operating a hotel circa to the second Territorial Session of the Nevada legislature. The St. Charles would serve as a governmental meeting place where legislators could have dinner. Additionally, services would be arranged for stage coaches to stop at the St. Charles upon first arrival in Carson City.
The Hotel's operators were of French descent, a baker and his wife (a skilled cook who ran the restaurant). A large core of the hotel's patrons were French Canadian woodcutters who worked in the region timbering wood for the mines in Virginia City. The St. Charles-Muller's Hotel is one of the oldest remaining commercial buildings in Carson City, and the second oldest hotel in the state.
Reasoning:
