Personal Notes
This ridiculous signage is located one mile away from the marker along US 395, and is not only erroneous but highly confusing! Seeing this sign you'd think the marker has gone missing or even worse that it stands along US 395 when it sits a mile to the east of the busy highway! This sign is a major problem for first-time marker hunters and has you believing that the marker is located along S. Carson Street. Two things need to happen:
(1) either this sign needs to have an arrow attached to its base pointing toward Snyder Avenue, or re-locate the darned thing one mile east on Snyder Avenue. Even so you'll find only one sign for [91] on the southbound lanes of US 50/395.
The ridiculous signage for this marker sits 1.1 miles west of its location!
Save yourselves the trouble and make a left in the direction of the "Correctional Facility!"

Exact Plaque Description:
Originally known as the Carson Indian Training School, Stewart Indian School, operated by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, provided vocational training and academic education for American Indian students from throughout the west for nearly a century.

W.D.C. Gibson, the first superintendent, renamed the boarding school in honor of U.S. Senator William Morris Stewart of Nevada, the principal figure in obtaining Congressional authorization and funding for the institution.

In the early 1920's, superintendent Frederick Snyder initiated a building program. Students worked with stone masons, some of American Indian ancestry, to construct the handsome stone structures that still grace the grounds.

This is a fantastic resource and location here in Carson City that educates the public about a forgotten piece of Nevada history. The main website and restored school (now a museum) are run by the Stewart Tribe and led by volunteers and docents.
